Regional Growth
- By 2050 over 3.4Bn tons of waste will be produced annually
- Advanced economies make up 16% of the world’s population but produce 34% of waste, but the developing world is catching up
- On current trends, the World Bank projects, by mid-century Europeans and North Americans will produce 25% more waste than they do today. In the same period, volumes will grow by 50% in East Asia, 100% in South Asia and 300% in sub-Saharan Africa
Drivers to CAGR:
- Unlocking of economies post-covid -during the COVID-19 pandemic, due to the lockdown, waste production decreased from the commercial and industrial sectors as factories and offices were completely or partially shut down (although urban waste increased from residential areas)
- Surge in biological / hazardous waste - biomedical waste generation increased due to the growth in various diagnostic activities and treatment of COVID-19 patients
- E-waste - rapid technological advancements have resulted in the continuous cycle of upgraded versions of the same products i.e. TV's, laptops and phones meaning the lifecycle and use of these devices is severely shortened, increasing e-waste generation (unless reused). Increasing buying power and wealth in developing countries also contributes to shortened lifecycle of products

Global Treatment & Disposal %
Waste composition differs across income levels, reflecting varied patterns of consumption. High-income countries generate relatively less food and green waste, at 32 percent of total waste, and generate more dry waste that could be recycled, including plastic, paper, cardboard, metal, and glass, which account for 51 percent of waste. Middle- and low-income countries generate 53 percent and 57 percent food and green waste, respectively,
Countries that advance from open dumping and other rudimentary waste management methods are more likely to succeed when they select locally appropriate solutions. Globally, most waste is currently dumped or disposed of in some form of a landfill.
