• Fertilizer can improve the overall health of the grass visually and structurally - i.e. root development
• A thicker lawn can shade out weeds and reduce dependency on herbicides
• Fertilizers come in many forms. Liquid traditionally gets the product to the plant faster for uptake, however slow release in a granular fashion may be more beneficial in the long run 
• Consider alternative methods of improving turf quality by introducing organic material and incorporating through top-dressing

Turf Fertilization

• Supplier should consider a “hot mix” which targets weeds established (post emergent) and those that have not broken through the surface (pre-emergent)
• Some turf weeds are not contained or eradicated as part of traditional maintenance program and need targeted approach (i.e. nutsedge)
• A good weed control program plays a tremendous part in establishing great curb appeal
  

Weed Control

• The cost to trim a tree can vary depending on maturity
• More mature sites may require more intense pruning than new properties just installed
• Trees can be trimmed for aesthetic purposes along contribute to a safer and more functional environment
• Trees are “assets” and budgetary consideration should be made to ensure their long-term survival. A healthier tree is less subject to disease and insect damage

• Plan to remove stumps when removing trees if possible to control spend
• Stump removal is better than grinding if you intend to plant something in the same area
• If you are merely removing a stump you will need to backfill the hole which will have an associated cost

• Usually stumps are ground below the surface allowing for new turf establishment
  • The more material left below grade from the original stump will deter the new seed from germinating / surviving above it
• Not a good option if you plan on planting something in its place
  

Stump Grinding

• Aeration allows for better introduction of air, water and essential nutrients for the grass to take up
• Combining aeration with topdressing and organic matter will allow for nutrients to get down to the roots
• With Aeration you can achieve a healthier, thicker turf

• As part of annual maintenance a Spring and Fall clean up may be required to remove debris, twigs, trash, leaves, etc.
  
• Some suppliers may not be able to complete Fall clean up as a result of early winter requiring this operation be finished in the Spring

• Tree pruning is a practice to ensure the plants vigor and longevity, concentrating on the removal of crossed, damaged or declining branches
  
• As trees are expensive to replace work with your supplier to approach tree pruning over multiple years

• The total cost depends on the lawn size, prep work and seed needed 
  
• Determine if your turf is thin due to moisture, insects or disease
• Depending on your geography late summer is the best time to seed, opposed to the spring. The newly established grass will tolerate transition better into winter dormancy over a hot summer

Turf Seeding

• The cost for a bed of annual flower beds installed in the landscape will vary depending on plant selection and quantity
• The focus of annual flower beds throughout any given property has shifted to specific main focal beds only to control spend (i.e. main entrance beds / signage)
• Work with your Landscape supplier to incorporate perennials (a one-time expense) into annual beds to reduce the reoccurring maintenance
• Critical to the success of any flower display is proper preparation to ensure the plants receive nutrients and have good drainage
• Sites should adhere to a  watering schedule

• Sod is usually quoted by the square foot
• Sod will provide an instant effect, but from a cost perspective it is not typically used in large areas
• Soil preparation is important as the roots are looking to develop and grow
  • The deeper the root structure, the healthier the grass and the more likely it will bounce back if there is a period of no moisture
