The First Layer of Security is Lighting.

Thousands of miles of perimeter fencing and other means are used to protect personal property, critical infrastructure, and individuals from theft, vandalism, and harm. A perimeter fence, door or gate is the first layer of defense. Since most disturbances occur under darkness, adding Security lighting is an essential part of every Security plan.

The role of lighting is to deter, detect, and detain individuals who would attempt to breach a secure perimeter.

Lighting with a high Colour Rendition Index (CRI) is generally preferred for security applications as it makes make the illuminated scenes look more normal.

1. Attributes of Security Lighting to consider

Confidential & Proprietary | 2024 CBRE Inc.

The attributes of each lighting type need careful appraisal for suitability to an application. Several factors influence the choice, such as:

  • The Area requiring coverage
  • What are the Lighting levels present
  • Does the Purchase cost outweigh the Risk?
  • Running or operational cost
  • Lamp life expectancy
  • Colour rendition – the ability to produce accurate colours
  • Light output
  • Reflectiveness of surrounding surfaces
  • Maintenance considerations

2. Suggested LUX (Illumination level) for Security Lighting

Your Lighting provider should work with and assist you with the correct type and brightness level of Security light to be installed, depending on the application / intended use.

Remember to consider such elements as shadowing, glare, and whether or not the lights need to be water-resistant or waterproof.
