Create large mowing paths for everyone to enjoy walking along to enjoy the nature and wildlife.

An example of neatly cared for band of turf with a meandering stand of meadow behind it.

Releasing Cool Season Turf Grass

  • Stop mowing and maintain existing turf
  • Stop blanket herbicide applications, weekly mowing, aeration etc.…
  • Create a “meandering” mow strip around meadow to show its being properly maintained
  • Educate your on-site clients about the changes through signage
  • Create inviting walking paths through the meadows
  • Spray or hand-pull undesirable weeds before they overcome the grass
  • Field mow in late winter / early spring. This will discourage woody plants from establishing

Identify Priority Areas & Inventory Assets

Create a Priority Checklist i.e. â€‹

1. Renovate flagpole area, beds along walk, beds at entrance

2. Beds at building entrance, trees along drive, beds at drive entrance

3. Supplement existing beds at the cafeteria

4. Renovate beds at entrance drive

Create a Tree Inventory Map

Much like any other 'asset list' it is important to document the various types of trees already onsite prior to any maintenance or further alterations - given the expense and / or potential  'protected status'.  It may be helpful to color code these

Convert  Annual Flower Beds Over To Perennials

Catmint

Lemon Drop Day Lilies

The main advantage to perennials is that they can easily adapt to weather conditions and are hardier than annual plants. They are normally planted once, but bloom year after year. Some perennial plants only bloom every other year and newly planted perennial plants may not bloom the first year or two (Sleep…Creep…Leap….)

Reduced maintenance cost - water / fertilizer / labor 1x cut back
